The courthouse square in Spencer will again have a “liar’s bench” on the corner, giving storytellers a location to spin their tales.
Spencer Main Street’s Historic Liar’s Bench project was one of 23 projects awarded funding through the Quick Impact Placebased Grant (QuIP) offered by the Indiana Office of Rural and Community Affairs and the Indiana Department of Tourism Development. According to information from Danielle Conner, this competitive matching grant program is designed to help build stronger communities through unique projects which promote engagement and interaction to enhance the distinctive character of local Indiana places for positive economic and community outcomes.
The $5,000 in grant funds, along with other funds raised, will be used to re-create the Historic Liar’s Bench on the Owen County Courthouse Square including the placement of new benches, trash receptacles and a tree. This grant emphasizes community collaboration as well as matching funds.
Spencer Main Street would like to thank Spencer VFW Post 1405, Robert Babbs, and the Owen County Community Foundation for their generosity. A special thanks goes to Sweet Owen Convention & Visitor’s Bureau for their continued support of the project as well as collaboration from the Owen County Community Foundation. And appreciation goes to the Owen County Commissioners for allowing the bench to be restored and replaced in its original location on the northeast corner of the square.
The VFW Post 1405 presented a generous donation of $1,250.00 to Spencer Main Street. The funds will be used for the re-creation of the historical liar’s bench. It will be added to the north east side of the court house square. The VFW Post 1405 is always looking for quality people to join and help with the VFW mission.
